Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree

Some college friendships stay in touch for years. Others become memories that people keep returning to. That feeling is at the heart of Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree, a Punjabi story that first connected with audiences through its web series and is now making its way to the big screen. The story became known for its simple focus on college life, friendships, relationships and the experiences that come with growing up. What started as a web series created by Rabby Tiwana during his college years went on to build a large audience, making Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree a familiar name among Punjabi viewers. With the film now set to release on Chaupal on 1 October 2026, here is a look at why this college friendship story became so popular in the first place. It Started With a Real College Experience One of the biggest reasons Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree connected with viewers was its setting. The original series revolved around the lives of university students and was created by Rabby Tiwana while he was studying at Punjabi University, Patiala. According to The Tribune, Tiwana had been developing the idea since his college days. The project eventually brought together his friends and fellow students, with much of the cast and crew being students themselves. The team even shot parts of the series around their regular college schedules. That real connection to college life gave the story a different feel. It was not simply a story about young people. It was created by people who were experiencing that phase of life themselves. The Story Felt Familiar to Young Punjabi Audiences College life comes with a certain mix of friendship, arguments, first relationships, confusion, ambitions and plenty of memorable moments. Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree brought many of these experiences together through a group of friends. The original series was based on the lives of college students, and its characters became one of the main reasons audiences stayed connected with it. For many viewers, the appeal was not about one dramatic storyline. It was about recognising something familiar in the characters and their friendships. That is also why the title became closely associated with college memories and friendship among Punjabi audiences. It Was One of the Early Punjabi Web Series to Find a Large Audience When Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree launched on YouTube in September 2018, Punjabi web content was still developing. The series quickly attracted attention. The Tribune reported in October 2018 that the first three episodes had already crossed 8.8 million, 5.8 million and 3.3 million views respectively. The audience continued to grow after the first season. By 2020, The Tribune reported that the first episode had reached 2.8 crore views, while repeated audience requests had helped motivate the team to return with another season. That response showed that Punjabi audiences were ready to follow longer-form stories built around everyday characters and experiences. The Friendship Was the Real Connect The title itself puts friendship at the centre of the story, and the original series built much of its appeal around a group of young people navigating college together. There were funny moments, emotional situations, relationships and disagreements, but the friendships between the characters remained an important part of the story. This is perhaps why the series continued to remain relevant even after its initial release. College eventually ends, but the friendships and memories created during those years often stay with people. The Characters Made the Story More Relatable The original series featured actors including Pukhraj Bhalla, Amrit Amby, Pawan Johal, Jasmin Bajwa and several others in its college-based story. Interestingly, many members of the original cast and crew were friends or students from the same academic environment. Rabby Tiwana also worked closely with people he knew personally while developing the project. That helped create an ensemble where the friendship between the characters felt central rather than simply being a background element. The Audience Wanted More of Their Story A strong indication of the show's popularity came when viewers began asking for another season. The first season ended with the friends drifting apart, and according to The Tribune, audience requests played a role in bringing the story back for a second season. That response is important because it shows that viewers were not only watching the episodes. They had become invested in the characters and wanted to know what happened to them next. For a story centred on friendship, that audience connection became an important part of its journey. From a College Web Series to a Feature Film The journey of Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree has now moved beyond the original web series. The upcoming Punjabi film brings the familiar idea of friendship into a new chapter. The story follows five estranged college friends who reunite years later when an invitation brings them back to campus. As they come together to revive a forgotten youth festival, old bonds and buried emotions begin to return. This gives the film an interesting connection with the original idea behind the title. The characters are no longer simply dealing with college life. They are looking back at a time that shaped their relationships. Why College Friendship Stories Continue to Work There is something universal about college friendships. People may come from different backgrounds, have different personalities and take completely different paths after graduation, but college often becomes a period that they remember together. That is what gives stories like Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree their lasting appeal. The setting may be Punjabi and the characters may belong to a particular college environment, but the emotions around friendship, growing up and losing touch can be understood by almost anyone. The original series also gave Punjabi audiences a story that felt close to their own surroundings and language. A Tribune report described the series as having the flavour of Punjab and noted its strong connection with young audiences. The Nostalgia Factor Makes the Film Interesting The new film adds another layer to the college-friendship story by bringing the characters together years later. Instead of simply showing what happens during college, it asks what happens when those friendships are tested by time. The return to campus and the forgotten youth festival provide a setting where old memories can come back, while unresolved emotions and personal struggles can change the way the friends see each other. For anyone who has ever looked back at their college years and wondered what happened to the people they once spent every day with, that idea can feel particularly familiar. Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree on Chaupal Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree is coming to Chaupal on 1 October 2026. The film stars Pukhraj Bhalla, Amrit Amby, Pawan Johal and Hashneen Chauhan, with Rabby Tiwana directing and writing the film. A College Story That Grew With Its Audience What makes Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree interesting is not just that it is a story about college friends. It is the journey behind the story. It began with an idea that Rabby Tiwana developed during his own college years, was created with the involvement of friends and students, found a large audience online and eventually returned because viewers wanted more. Now, the story is moving into a feature film, bringing its themes of friendship, memories and growing up to a new audience. For those who followed the original series, it offers a chance to revisit a familiar world. For new viewers, it is a story about something much simpler: the friendships we make in college and what happens when life takes us in different directions.
