Sargun Mehta Filmography

Sargun Mehta's path to Punjabi cinema didn't start in Punjab at all. She built her name on Hindi television first - as the lead of Phulwa, and later in Balika Vadhu - before a chance audition brought her to Angrej in 2015. That television-honed instinct for playing to an audience's emotions is still visible in her filmography today, whether she's crying through a doomed love story or getting revenge as a ghost in a horror-comedy. Angrej made her a name in Pollywood practically overnight, earning her the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Actress in her very first film. Since then she's built one of the most consistently acclaimed careers in the industry - five PTC Punjabi Film Awards, two Filmfare Awards Punjabi, and a filmography that swings from period romance to dark comedy to horror. She's also become a producer in her own right through Dreamiyata Entertainment, the company behind hits like Udaariyaan and several of her own films, and she remains one half of Punjabi cinema's most bankable pairing alongside Ammy Virk in Qismat. This guide walks through 8 of her defining movies (with her two-part Qismat story covered as a single entry), a quick look at her most popular genres, and answers to the questions Punjabi movie audiences most often ask about her filmography. Consider it a Sargun Mehta movies list, covering her full Sargun Mehta filmography and the Punjabi movies of Sargun Mehta that best represent her range. Sargun Mehta Movies You Should Know About 1. Angrej Release: 2015 Genre: Historical Romance, Comedy Director: Simerjit Singh Writer: Amberdeep Singh Cast: Amrinder Gill, Sargun Mehta, Aditi Sharma, Ammy Virk, Binnu Dhillon Angrej marked Sargun Mehta's film debut, and it's hard to imagine a bigger one. Set against the backdrop of the waning British Raj, she plays Dhann Kaur, a young woman caught in a love story with Angrej (Amrinder Gill) across lines of social class. The period romance leans on old-world Punjabi culture, gentle comedy, and Amrinder Gill's soundtrack to build its emotional pull. Sargun's performance won her the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Actress in her very first film - a rare feat that immediately signalled she wasn't just a television crossover but a genuine leading lady. Angrej remains one of the highest-grossing Punjabi films of its era and the film most credited with launching her Pollywood career. 2. Love Punjab Release: 2016 Genre: Family Drama Director: Rajiv Dhingra Writer: Amberdeep Singh Cast: Amrinder Gill, Sargun Mehta, Yograj Singh, Nirmal Rishi Love Punjab reunited Sargun Mehta with Amrinder Gill for a story about a Punjabi couple living in Canada whose marriage is quietly falling apart while their son struggles with depression. Sargun plays Jessica Brar, who returns to Punjab with her husband to reconnect their son with his roots - without letting their families know about the looming divorce. It's a quieter, more emotionally grounded film than the comedies she'd become known for, and her performance won her a Filmfare Award Punjabi for Best Actress. The film's themes of identity, family, and reconnecting with one's culture have kept it relevant with audiences well beyond its original release. 3. Jindua Release: 2017 Genre: Romantic Drama Director: Navaniat Singh Writer: Dheeraj Rattan Cast: Jimmy Sheirgill, Neeru Bajwa, Sargun Mehta Jindua puts Sargun Mehta at the centre of a love triangle set partly in Canada, where she plays Saggi opposite Jimmy Sheirgill and Neeru Bajwa. The romantic drama explores loyalty, old love, and the complications that follow when the past refuses to stay in the past. Sargun brings a softer, more vulnerable register to the film than her comic roles, and her chemistry with her co-stars was widely praised on release. It's a good showcase of her range within romantic drama - a genre she'd return to again and again over the following years. 4. Lahoriye Release: 2017 Genre: Drama, Romance Director: Amberdeep Singh Writer: Amberdeep Singh Cast: Amrinder Gill, Sargun Mehta, Yuvraj Hans, Nimrat Khaira Lahoriye is a cross-border love story that leans into nostalgia for undivided Punjab. Sargun Mehta plays Ameeran Khan, a Pakistani Punjabi woman who falls for Kikkar Singh (Amrinder Gill), an Indian Punjabi man, when he travels to Lahore. The film uses their romance to explore the emotional ties that still bind people across the India-Pakistan border decades after Partition. Sargun's performance earned her a second Filmfare Award Punjabi for Best Actress, cementing her as one of the era's most consistently awarded Punjabi actresses, and the film's soundtrack and setting made it a critical and audience favourite. 5. Qismat Release: 2018 (Qismat) Genre: Romance, Drama Director: Jagdeep Sidhu Writer: Jagdeep Sidhu Cast: Ammy Virk, Sargun Mehta. No role is more closely tied to Sargun Mehta than Bani in Qismat - a performance she herself has called one of the most special of her career. The 2018 original follows Bani and Shivjit (Ammy Virk), whose devotion to each other is tested by an arranged marriage and circumstances outside their control. It became one of the highest-grossing Punjabi films ever made, driven as much by its soulful music as by Sargun and Ammy's chemistry. 6. Jhalle Release: 2019 Genre: Dark Comedy Director: Amarjit Singh Saron Writer: Amarjit Singh Saron Cast: Binnu Dhillon, Sargun Mehta, Pavan Malhotra Jhalle - which translates to "crazy" - pairs Sargun Mehta with Binnu Dhillon in an unconventional love story between two people the world considers a little unhinged. Sargun also produced the film through her own Dreamiyata Entertainment banner alongside Binnu Dhillon, putting her creative stamp on the project beyond just acting in it. The dark comedy blends innocence and intensity in a way that's unusual for mainstream Punjabi cinema, and it's frequently cited as proof that Sargun is willing to take on stranger, more character-driven material rather than sticking to conventional romantic leads. 7. Sidhus of Southall Release: 2023 Genre: Comedy, Family Drama Director: Navaniat Singh Writer: Inderpal Singh Cast: Sargun Mehta, Ajay Sarkaria, Prince Kanwaljit Singh, B.N. Sharma Set among a Punjabi family in London, Sidhus of Southall gives Sargun Mehta the title role as Tina Sidhu, who accidentally kills her stalker while organising a millionaire's wedding - and then has to cover it up without her boyfriend or her chaotic extended family finding out. It's a broader, more farcical comedy than much of her filmography, built around comedy-of-errors chaos rather than romantic longing. Sargun carries the film as its clear lead, holding together a large ensemble cast while shifting between comic panic and warmth, and the film went straight to digital release on Chaupal after its theatrical run. 8. Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri Release: 2024 Genre: Horror, Comedy Director: Vikas Vashisht Writer: Amberdeep Singh Cast: Gippy Grewal, Sargun Mehta, Roopi Gill, Nirmal Rishi Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri takes Sargun Mehta into horror-comedy territory as Rani, a woman who marries a man convinced all women are "chudails" (witches) - only for him to discover she might actually be one. Sargun, who also produced the film alongside her husband Ravi Dubey, uses the role to flip the joke back on the film's misogynistic premise, turning Rani into a charismatic, quietly subversive presence rather than a punchline. The horror-comedy blend is a genre rarely attempted in Punjabi cinema, and Sargun's performance is widely credited as the reason the film connected with audiences beyond its premise. Sargun Mehta's Most Popular Movie Genres A few recurring genres define Sargun Mehta's filmography and explain why she's remained one of Punjabi cinema's most consistently awarded leading ladies. Across her Sargun Mehta films, a handful of genres show up again and again. Romantic Dramas Sargun Mehta's romantic dramas - Qismat, Jindua, Lahoriye - tend to explore love complicated by family duty, social divides, or circumstances beyond the characters' control. It's the genre that's earned her the most acting awards, and the one most associated with her name. Comedy & Family Entertainers Films like Sidhus of Southall and Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri show her broader comic range, leaning on chaos, mistaken identity, and larger ensemble casts. These titles also reflect her growing role behind the camera as a producer, not just a lead performer. Character-Driven Dramas Angrej and Love Punjab remain the clearest examples of Sargun Mehta anchoring a story on emotional realism rather than spectacle - roles that earned her some of her earliest and most significant acting honours. Dark Comedy Jhalle stands apart in her filmography as a stranger, more character-driven dark comedy - proof that Sargun is willing to move away from conventional romantic leads into unconventional, sometimes uncomfortable territory.
