Punjabi Gangster Movies

Dev Kharoud has built one of Punjabi cinema's most compelling careers by refusing to be boxed into a single role type. From his breakout performance as gangster Rupinder Gandhi in 2015 to his most recent spiritual drama Ucha Dar Babe Nanak Da, Kharoud has proven himself a performer willing to shift registers, from hard-edged crime sagas to family dramas to action thrillers. His screen presence carries an intensity that works equally well whether he's playing a cop taking on corruption, a young man wrestling with addiction, or a husband finding redemption through faith. Over the past decade, Kharoud has anchored some of Punjabi cinema's most-watched films. He's built recurring roles across sequels, the Dakuaan Da Munda franchise (2018-2022) and the Blackia series, while also taking on one-off performances that showcase different sides of his craft. Whether he's carrying an action-crime hybrid or lending gravitas to a quieter, more introspective story, Kharoud brings the same work ethic and commitment that earned him critical recognition early in his career. This guide walks through 10 of his most significant films, all currently streaming on Chaupal, tracing his punjabi filmography from that career-defining debut through the genres and characters that have kept him one of Punjabi cinema's most bankable and respected leading men. Dev Kharoud Movies You Should Know About 1. Dev carries the film as Rupinder Gandhi, the gang's charismatic leader, with a performance that earned him immediate critical recognition. His portrayal balances the character's intelligence, ambition, and the moral compromises that come with leading a vigilante operation. The film's gritty realism and Dev's committed performance immediately signaled that he was a serious actor, not just a handsome lead. Rupinder Gandhi went on to become a touchstone for crime dramas in Punjabi cinema, and it remains Dev's most definitive work. 2. Rupinder Gandhi 2: The Robinhood Release: 2017 Genre: Crime, Political, Action Director: Avtar Singh Cast: Dev Kharoud, Jagjeet Sandhu, Kajal Behl, Lucky Dhaliwal, Saanvi Dhiman The sequel reunites Dev with director Avtar Singh for a deeper dive into Rupinder Gandhi's mythology, this time shifting focus from idealistic youth to a more complex anti-hero narrative. The film picks up years later, showing how Rupinder has evolved into a Robin Hood figure, robbing the wealthy and redistributing to the poor while navigating a treacherous political landscape. Dev's performance is quieter and more layered this time, showing a man caught between his ideology and the brutal realities of his choices. The second film proved Dev's range within the crime-drama genre, he could anchor a franchise and grow a character across multiple films without repetition. 3. Dakuaan Da Munda Release: 2018 Genre: Drama, Comedy Director: Mandeep Benipal Cast: Dev Kharoud, Japji Khaira, Jagjeet Sandhu, Pooja Verma, Lucky Dhaliwal Based on the autobiography of former gangster Mintu Gurusaria, Dakuaan Da Munda tells the story of a young Kabaddi player whose life derails when he becomes entangled with the drug trade, but who eventually fights his way out of addiction to rebuild his life. Dev's performance as Mintu earned him significant acclaim, with critics praising his ability to convey both the charisma and the desperation of a man trapped in a destructive cycle. The film balances heavy subject matter, addiction, violence, redemption, with lighter moments of humor and family drama, and Dev navigates that tonal shift with ease. It became one of the highest-grossing Punjabi films of 2018, proving that Dev could anchor stories beyond crime dramas and that audiences were invested in his character work. 4. Blackia Release: 2019 Genre: Crime, Action Director: Sukhminder Dhanjal Cast: Dev Kharoud, Ashish Duggal, Arsh Hundal, Ihana Dhillon Blackia transports the viewer to 1970s Punjab during the height of the illegal liquor trade, with Dev playing Gama, a young man drawn into the underworld through circumstances beyond his control. Set against that specific historical backdrop, the film explores themes of honor, loyalty, and survival in a lawless frontier. Dev's performance is raw and intense, capturing the essence of a character trying to navigate a world of moral compromise while maintaining some connection to his roots. The film's success led to Blackia 2 (2024), making it one of Dev's signature franchises alongside Dakuaan Da Munda. 5. DSP Dev Release: 2019 Genre: Action, Thriller Director: Mandeep Benipal Cast: Dev Kharoud, Mehreen Pirzada, Manav Vij, Aman Dhaliwal DSP Dev marks a significant shift in Dev's career by placing him on the right side of the law. He plays Deputy Superintendent of Police Dev Shergill, an honest cop navigating a corrupt system while trying to protect the innocent and bring criminals to justice. The film is action-packed but centers on Dev's portrayal of moral conviction, a man who refuses to compromise even when the system around him encourages it. This role demonstrated that Dev could carry action-thriller beats without relying on the gangster mythology that defined his earlier work. His chemistry with co-star Mehreen Pirzada added another dimension, showing that Dev could anchor a film with romantic tension alongside the crime-fighting plot. 6. Kaka Ji Release: 2019 Genre: Romance, Comedy Director: Mandeep Benipal Cast: Dev Kharoud, Aarushi Sharma, Jagjeet Sandhu, Dheeraj Kumar A departure into lighter territory, Kaka Ji is a family comedy-romance built around Dev's character as a man trying to protect his love interest while getting entangled with a dangerous criminal gang. The film leans on comedy and family drama rather than serious crime storytelling, giving Dev room to show his lighter side. His performance balances humor with genuine emotion, proving he could succeed in romantic comedies, a genre many action-crime stars struggle with. The film didn't achieve the same commercial heights as his crime dramas, but it remains important in showing Dev's range as a performer willing to take on diverse roles. 7. Zakhmi Release: 2020 Genre: Action, Drama, Romance Director: Inderpal Singh Cast: Dev Kharoud, Anchal Singh, Teju Popli, Lakha Lehri Zakhmi (The Wounded) follows a man who comes to the city seeking opportunities but becomes entangled in violence while trying to protect his family. The film's title refers both to physical wounds and emotional trauma, Dev's character carries both as he navigates a world of crime and moral corruption. His performance is grounded and empathetic, showing a man pushed to his limits but fighting to maintain his humanity. The action sequences are strong, but the film's real power lies in Dev's portrayal of internal struggle, the emotional cost of the choices his character is forced to make. 8. Dev returns to the character with added gravitas, his Mintu is now older, more world-weary, and navigating even higher stakes. The film expands the scale of the original, bringing in bigger action sequences and more complex political intrigue, but Dev's performance remains grounded and character-focused. His ability to evolve a character across sequels while maintaining authenticity is one of his greatest strengths as an actor. 9. The film explores the complexities of family duty versus personal desire, with Dev playing a character caught between loyalty to his brother and his own heart. This role is quiet, introspective, and meditative, a complete contrast to his gangster and action roles. Dev plays a man learning to surrender his ego and violence in favor of spiritual wisdom, and his performance carries genuine tenderness and vulnerability. The film suggests a possible evolution in Dev's career, one where his intensity and screen presence serve quieter, more emotionally complex characters. Dev Kharoud's Most Popular Movie Genres A handful of genres define Dev Kharoud's filmography and explain why he's remained one of Punjabi cinema's most consistently working and respected leading men. These films explore his ability to portray morally complex characters operating outside the law, whether as idealistic vigilantes or men drawn into criminal life by circumstance. His performances in this genre show an actor interested in the psychology behind crime rather than just the spectacle of violence. Action & Thriller Films like DSP Dev, Zakhmi, and Shareek 2 place Dev in action-heavy narratives where his physical presence and intensity serve the story. But Dev never lets action sequences overwhelm character work, his action films remain grounded in emotional stakes and moral questions.
