Carry On Jatta

Gippy Grewal built his name in music long before he stepped in front of a camera - his 2011 track "Angreji Beat" was such a phenomenon it found its way into the Bollywood film Cocktail. But it's his film career that turned him into one of Punjabi cinema's most bankable names, one capable of swinging between a turbaned action hero, a hardened prison gangster, and a hapless dad losing a battle of wits with his own son - sometimes all within the same year. He's also one of the few Punjabi stars who's built as much behind the camera as in front of it: Carry On Jatta, the three-part comedy franchise he's fronted since 2012, remains one of the genre's biggest commercial engines in Pollywood, while Ardaas marked his debut as a writer-director and became a defining moment in his career shift toward more socially conscious storytelling. Along the way he's founded his own production house, Humble Motion Pictures, and turned his own family - including his son Shinda - into part of the on-screen draw. This guide walks through 10 of his defining movies (with his three-part Carry On Jatta franchise covered as a single entry), a quick look at his most popular genres, and answers to the questions Punjabi movie audiences most often ask about his filmography. Gippy Grewal Movies You Should Know About 1. Mirza – The Untold Story Release: 2012 Genre: Action, Romance Director: Baljit Singh Deo Writer: Baljit Singh Deo Cast: Gippy Grewal, Mandy Takhar, Rahul Dev, Binnu Dhillon Mirza – The Untold Story reimagines the legendary Punjabi folk romance of Mirza and Sahiba, with Gippy Grewal in the title role opposite Mandy Takhar. Childhood sweethearts torn apart by circumstance, Mirza and Sahiba are reunited years later, only for Mirza to discover that Sahiba's own brother now runs the gang he's set out to infiltrate. Director Baljit Singh Deo - who'd go on to become one of Gippy's most frequent collaborators - stages the film as a tense mix of old-world romance and gang warfare, with rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh appearing in one of his earliest film roles as a gangster aligned against Mirza. The film gave Gippy one of his earliest dramatic action leads, moving him beyond the straight comedies that had defined his career up to that point. 2. Carry On Jatta Franchise Release: 2012 (Carry On Jatta), 2018 (Carry On Jatta 2), 2023 (Carry On Jatta 3) Genre: Comedy Director: Smeep Kang Writer: Naresh Kathooria (1); Vaibhav Suman, Shreya Srivastava (2 & 3) Cast: Gippy Grewal, Binnu Dhillon, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Jaswinder Bhalla, with Mahie Gill (1) and Sonam Bajwa (2 & 3) No franchise is more closely tied to Gippy Grewal than Carry On Jatta, the mistaken-identity comedy series that turned him into one of Punjabi cinema's biggest draws. The 2012 original follows Jass, who lies to the woman he loves about having no family, and spirals into escalating chaos trying to keep the lie alive - a film that achieved the highest opening and second-highest total collections for a Punjabi film at the time, and is still widely regarded as a genre-defining hit. Director Smeep Kang stayed on for both sequels, bringing back the same chaotic energy with Sonam Bajwa joining as the new leading lady from Carry On Jatta 2 onward. Carry On Jatta 3 went on to become one of the highest-grossing Punjabi films ever made, proving the franchise's pull hadn't faded more than a decade after it began. Across all three films, Gippy's comic timing as the hapless man caught in his own web of lies remains the throughline that's kept audiences coming back. 3. Singh vs Kaur Release: 2013 Genre: Action, Romantic Comedy Director: Navaniat Singh Writer: Dheeraj Rattan Cast: Gippy Grewal, Surveen Chawla, Binnu Dhillon, Japji Khaira Singh vs Kaur marked a small but notable first for Gippy - his first film sporting a full turban and beard - and cast him as Nihal, a young man who invents a fictional girlfriend to escape an unwanted marriage proposal back home, then travels to Canada trying to track down a real woman who matches the lie he's told his whole village. It was also historic for a different reason: the first Punjabi film produced by a major multi-lingual producer, D. Ramanaidu, signaling growing outside interest in Pollywood's commercial potential. Director Navaniat Singh leans hard into physical comedy and action set pieces alongside the romantic entanglement, giving Gippy room to play both the fool and the action lead in the same film. It became one of his standout releases of a genuinely packed 2013. 4. Best of Luck Release: 2013 Genre: Action, Comedy Director: Manmord Sidhu Writer: Dheeraj Rattan, Anugrah Bohrey Cast: Gippy Grewal, Jazzy B, Simran Kaur Mundi, Sonam Bajwa Set between Vancouver and Punjab, Best of Luck follows two men whose accidental kidnapping of a gangster spirals into an unlikely friendship, one that ends up helping them win over their respective love interests' families. The film doubled as an acting debut for Punjabi singer Jazzy B, with Gippy Grewal anchoring the comedy alongside him as the story piles on international settings, mistaken loyalties, and family drama. It's a lighter, more ensemble-driven film than some of Gippy's other 2013 work, leaning on chemistry between its two music-star leads rather than any single performance. Best of Luck rounded out a year that saw Gippy release four films, cementing his reputation as Pollywood's most reliably prolific leading man. 5. Ardaas Release: 2016 Genre: Drama Director: Gippy Grewal Writer: Gippy Grewal Cast: Gurpreet Ghuggi, Ammy Virk, B.N. Sharma, Rana Ranbir, Mandy Takhar Ardaas marked Gippy Grewal's debut as a writer-director, and it's a sharp departure from the comedies that built his acting career. The film follows Master Gurmukh (Gurpreet Ghuggi), a teacher posted to a new village school who quietly helps the people around him confront their own mistakes and rebuild their faith, with Gippy taking on a brief cameo behind the story rather than a lead role. Released the same day as Amrinder Gill's Love Punjab - a first in Punjabi cinema history - Ardaas held its own critically, praised for treating its subject matter, including Punjab's drug crisis, with sincerity rather than spectacle. The film's success behind the camera reoriented the rest of Gippy's career, leading directly to a sequel, Ardaas Karaan, and a string of other directing and writing credits. Ardaas remains the clearest signal that Gippy sees himself as more than just Pollywood's comedy lead. 6. Paani Ch Madhaani Release: 2021 Genre: Romantic Comedy-Drama Director: Vijay Kumar Arora Writer: Naresh Kathooria Cast: Gippy Grewal, Neeru Bajwa, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Karamjit Anmol Paani Ch Madhaani reunited Gippy Grewal with Neeru Bajwa a decade after their last film together, casting them as Gulli and Sohni in a period romantic comedy set in the 1980s. Gulli is a struggling singer whose group leans on shortcuts and clever jugaad to chase success, and the film follows the ambition, friendship, and rivalry that follow as their fortunes rise and fall. Director Vijay Kumar Arora - known for the National Award-winning Harjeeta - gives the film a nostalgic period texture rather than a straightforward comedy setting, using the 1980s backdrop to add warmth to the central romance. Delayed repeatedly by the pandemic before its eventual release, the film's long-awaited pairing of two of Pollywood's most established stars was itself a major part of its appeal. Paani Ch Madhaani showed Gippy could still headline a nostalgic, music-driven romance well into his established stardom. 7. Warning 2 Release: 2024 Genre: Action, Drama, Thriller Director: Amar Hundal Writer: Gippy Grewal, Nasir Zaman Cast: Gippy Grewal, Prince Kanwaljit Singh, Jasmin Bhasin, Rahul Dev Warning 2 picks up with Geja (Gippy Grewal) in prison after a failed attempt to assassinate his rival Pamma, only to find Pamma locked up in the very same jail. Director Amar Hundal builds the sequel around the volatile ecosystem of prison gangs and shifting loyalties that surrounds the two men, with Gippy co-writing the script alongside Nasir Zaman. It's a darker, more sustained thriller register than most of Gippy's filmography, trading comic timing for a slow-building predator-and-prey dynamic. The film performed solidly at the box office, proving Gippy's action-thriller side still had an audience nearly a decade after his early action leads. Warning 2 stands as one of the more purely dramatic entries in a catalogue otherwise dominated by comedy. 8. Vivaah KartaaRe Da Release: 2026Genre: Comedy, RomanceDirector: Smeep KangWriter: Chanchal DabraCast: Gippy Grewal, Nimrat Khaira, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Hardin Gill, Inaamulhaq. Vivaah KartaaRe Da follows Kartar, a lazy but cunning young man who fakes the death of his corrupt cop father so he can take over his job and marry the girl he loves. The plan unravels when his father suddenly wakes up from a coma, and Kartar has to keep piling on lies to cover his tracks. Gippy Grewal and Nimrat Khaira headline this comedy, directed by Smeep Kang and written by Chanchal Dabra. 9. Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri Release: 2024 Genre: Horror, Comedy Director: Vikas Vashisht Writer: Amberdeep Singh Cast: Gippy Grewal, Sargun Mehta, Roopi Gill, Nirmal Rishi, B.N. Sharma Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri takes Gippy Grewal into horror-comedy territory as Jalaludeen, a man who dismisses demanding wives as "chudails" (witches) - only to fall for and marry a woman he grows convinced might actually be one. Director Vikas Vashisht and writer Amberdeep Singh use the premise to flip the joke back on Jalaludeen's own prejudices, with Sargun Mehta's performance as Rani doing much of the work turning a comedy built on a sexist premise into something with real teeth. The horror-comedy blend is rare territory for Punjabi cinema, and the pairing of two of Pollywood's biggest names carried the film through its theatrical run despite mixed reviews. It was one of three Gippy releases in 2024, alongside Warning 2 and Shinda Shinda No Papa, making it one of the busiest years of his career. Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri is proof Gippy's still willing to take genre swings well over a decade into stardom. 10. Sarbala Ji Release: 2025 Genre: Comedy, Drama Director: Mandeep Kumar Writer: Inderjit Moga Cast: Gippy Grewal, Ammy Virk, Nimrat Khaira, Sargun Mehta, Guggu Gill Sarbala Ji reunites Gippy Grewal with Ammy Virk in a wedding comedy built around Punjabi tradition: Sucha (Gippy Grewal) talks his shy, soon-to-be-married cousin Gajjan (Ammy Virk) into letting him serve as the sarbala - the ceremonial page boy who assists the groom - and the harmless favour spirals into a wedding thrown into chaos by runaway grooms, bandits, and mistaken identities. Director Mandeep Kumar leans on ensemble farce rather than a single romantic thread, with Nimrat Khaira and Sargun Mehta rounding out the cast as the film's other key women. After a theatrical run, the film premiered on Chaupal as an October 2025 exclusive, making it Gippy's most recent Chaupal release. Sarbala Ji closes out this list on familiar ground for Gippy - a big ensemble comedy leaning on chaos and mistaken identity, the same formula that's carried his career since Carry On Jatta. Gippy Grewal's Most Popular Movie Genres A few genres come up again and again across Gippy Grewal's filmography, and together they explain how he's stayed one of Pollywood's most consistently bankable names. Comedy & Family Entertainers The Carry On Jatta franchise, Best of Luck, Shinda Shinda No Papa, Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri, and Sarbala Ji all lean on mistaken identity, family chaos, and Gippy's comic timing. These titles are the commercial backbone of his career and the genre most associated with his name. Action & Crime Dramas Singh vs Kaur, Warning 2, and Mirza – The Untold Story show Gippy's action-lead side, trading comedy for gang warfare, prison politics, and higher-stakes plotting. Social & Family Dramas Ardaas stands apart as Gippy's clearest dramatic statement - the film that launched his career as a writer-director and shifted his creative ambitions beyond acting alone. Romantic Period Comedies Paani Ch Madhaani shows a nostalgic, music-driven side of Gippy Grewal Movies, built around a long-awaited reunion with a former co-star rather than his usual comic ensembles.
